Partnership Overview:

The Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS) is a collaboration between the State of Alabama, the Alabama Community College System, and hospital systems throughout the state with the goal of producing an employee pipeline for those healthcare careers in highest demand across the state.

Primary Purpose:

The Healthcare Project Director brings the workforce development needs and expertise of Alabama hospitals into the design and execution of the ASHS. Working alongside school leadership, the Project Director works to ensure the student experience includes rich exposure to career pathways as well as training and employment opportunities that guarantee ASHS students attain the education and certifications needed to enter careers in healthcare immediately after graduation.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Healthcare Partner Engagement:

●       Meet with hospital partners and build relationships with workforce development and clinical leadership to begin documenting short- and long-term hospital system commitments to ASHS.

●       Work collaboratively with operational and clinical leadership to facilitate meeting discussions, engage all relevant stakeholders, and develop useful presentation materials with the goal of advancing and achieving the stated pathway milestones and objectives.

●       Draft early versions of MOAs for key partners to articulate their financial and programmatic commitments to the project.

●       Identify and elevate roadblocks/risks to be resolved by the ASHS Board of Trustees.

 

Work-Based Learning Program Design & Implementation:

●     Engage subject matter clinical experts to advise ASHS on curriculum selections, course sequences, core curriculum integration, and performance metrics needed to assess the success of students and the program. (With the departmental clinical leaders/managers, ensure that curriculum aligns with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and the evolving needs of the healthcare sector.)

●     Engage clinical and non-clinical, cross-functional hospital staff in the planning, design and execution of work-based learning programming that includes a combination of career exploration, hospital visits, simulation experiences, clinical externship experiences, mentorship, and paid and unpaid internships.

●     Using a youth-development perspective, evaluate and recommend changes to programming that will maximize student engagement and retention, tapping national strategies to retain graduates in health careers training programs.

●     In collaboration with hospital staff, lead the design of an employee mentoring program.

●     Work with school administration to create and execute strong program evaluation and a reporting cadence that keeps the Board of Trustees and external stakeholders informed.

●     Monitor WBL compliance (youth labor laws and accompanying paperwork, parent permissions and liability forms, transportation logistics, tracking student hours/competencies for reporting and transcripts)

●     Work with hospitals to ensure student onboarding compliance (HIPAA confidentiality training, immunizations, TB testing, drug screens, background checks

 

Network Development:

●     Partner with the ASHS Admissions Counselor to build relationships across the state with school leaders and youth-serving programs to promote the ASHS opportunity to students and families.

●     Act as “Lead Champion” to tell the story of ASHS to healthcare professionals in a position to spread the word in their communities of this unique opportunity to build a local, rural pipeline of well-paid healthcare professionals.

 

Project Management:

●       Maintain key partnership documents, such as governance structures and implementation plans, and develop useful presentation materials with the goal of advancing and achieving the stated milestones and objectives.

●       Oversight of progress and resource allocation to ensure alignment with project and school budget expectations;

●       Prepare for and facilitate hospital project leadership meetings on a monthly or bi-weekly cadence with the guidance of ASHS school leadership.

●       Identify and report on performance metrics and benchmarks to assess the success of key project design milestones, work-based learning experiences, and overall student engagement.

●       Under the direction of hospital and ASHS school leadership, develop strong, positive relationships with post-secondary partners committed to supporting the design and execution of healthcare pathways.

●       Participate in the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ community of practice for healthcare staff leading similar projects in nine other geographies and utilize all support resources made available to grantees.

●       Supervisory & Fiscal Responsibilities: Oversight of the Work-based learning program for students in all grades (9-12). Oversight of identified career pathways and hospital preceptors’ development. Oversight and tracking of budget management and financial reporting for work-based learning expenses.

●       Support and develop clinical site mentors/preceptors

 

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

●     Willingness to own the project while also doing intense project management, overseeing all the little details, herding partners together, and putting key documents together.

●     Entrepreneurial in nature, willing to create something that must still be fully designed and iterated upon, and able to move things forward despite uncertainty.

●     Ability to build a sense of team across various partners and sectors.

●     A high-energy, “go-getter" personality with a track record of getting things done amidst complexity.

●     Ideally: Knowledge of young people and workforce development coupled with a knowledge of the healthcare industry and hospital management.

●     Ideally: Have an extensive network throughout the state of Alabama

 

Qualifications:

●     Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred – preferably in Healthcare Administration, Public Health, Education, or related field.

●     5-10+ years of Program Management experience required, preferably in a healthcare, education, workforce development, or youth program setting.

●     Experience designing or overseeing clinical placements, work-based learning, or youth internship programs preferred.

●     Familiarity with Alabama Work-Based Learning regulations, youth labor laws, and HIPAA/FERPA compliance preferred

●     Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills with K-12, postsecondary, and healthcare partners.

●     Must maintain confidentiality of both student and patient information (HIPAA/FERPA)

The school’s top priority is to improve the health of all Alabamians by developing strong, capable leaders in healthcare.

POSITION SUMMARY: We are seeking highly motivated and qualified Teachers to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the delivery of the instructional program for the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.            Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university or college

2.            Hold or are eligible for certification in Alabama and meet highly qualified status

3.            Preferred background and experience in secondary, 9-12 education

4.            Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes

REPORTS TO: President and Dean of Curriculum and Instruction

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with ASHS’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by ASHS.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrate support for the school and its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Understand and assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences policies.
  3. Participate in the efficient and effective operation of the school through meetings, conferences, and committee responsibilities.
  4. Accept no other employment which interferes with the efficient and effective discharge of teacher duties and responsibilities.
  5. Implement and follow the Teaching Standards developed by the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences.
  6. Abide by the standards established for teachers' professional and personal conduct by the printed and published Code of Ethics.
  7. Follow the course of study of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences and curriculum guides and textbooks approved and adopted by ASHS. Other material used for instructional purposes must be approved by the Dean of Curriculum and Instruction.
  8. Assist in fostering positive student attitudes through teaching, in all activities of the school program, the core values of innovation, empathy, innovation and service.
  9. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations at the times designated.

  11. Establish and maintain appropriate discipline in the classroom and assist staff in establishment and maintenance of discipline in the school environment.
  12. Prepare lesson plans with clear objectives for assigned classes upon request of the President and Dean of Curriculum and Instruction.
  13. Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, policy, and administrative regulation.
  14. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis and in accordance with ASHS's established procedures.
  15. Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to safeguard all equipment, materials, and facilities.
  16. Make reasonable efforts to be available to school officials, students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day.
  17. Work with other staff members in planning school activities, instructional goals, objectives, and methods.

  19. Participate in extracurricular activities as mutually agreed upon by faculty and administration.
  20. Attend and participate regularly in faculty meetings.
