Why a Residential School

At the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences, being a residential high school is not just a feature of our campus. It’s a core part of how we serve our students and prepare them for life beyond high school. Modeled after other successful residential schools in the state – the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering, the Alabama School of Fine Arts, and the Alabama School of Math and Science – ASHS is designed to give students a unique, immersive educational experience.
A residential setting allows us to welcome students from every part of Alabama. That diversity brings strength to our community, helping students learn from different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives as they live and grow alongside one another.
Living on campus also gives students more time and space to discover who they are becoming. This is a place where they can explore new ideas, build resilience, and develop lasting connections. Through daily life, students will grow into our core values: Compassion, Innovation, Integrity, and Service.

Beyond the Classroom
Being residential also allows learning to stretch beyond the classroom. Healthcare doesn’t stop at 3 p.m., and neither does the opportunity to learn. Students will have the flexibility to shadow professionals at Whitfield Regional Hospital during evenings or weekends, gaining firsthand insight into the real-world demands of the healthcare industry.
We know the idea of living away from home as a freshman can feel like a big step for both students and families, but this will be a shared experience among all the students. Every incoming freshman will be part of a class taking that step together, supported by dorm parents, live-in staff, and licensed mental health counselors. Safety will always be our top priority, and all residential staff will undergo extensive background checks and training.
Your child’s journey at ASHS will be challenging, exciting, and deeply rewarding. With the right support, students don’t just adapt, they thrive.
